Being in Beijing during autumn afforded the opportunity to visit Fragrant Mountain (Xiang Shan) during the seasonal changing of colors. With my good friend Xu Li Jun, a wonderful artist, as my guide I climbed to the top of the mountain for a breath taking view of the valley and Beijing below. Along the way we would stop to sketch whatever interesting scene caught our attention. In this case we found a walled cluster of buildings just below the walk path. We sat on a knoll just above and each did a quick pen and ink sketch. I wrote the date in Chinese at the lower right: 2004y11m6d. Above that I signed my Chinese name, Li Dang. Above the line is "Xiang Shan" and my red signature chop. Later I added watercolor using the same quick sketch approach.
